Collection contains three letters. Two are from F.M. Nivin, Jr. and one is from F.M. Nivin, Sr. The younger man had apparently preached in Madison Co., Va. and never wants to preach there again, nor in Hanover Co., Va., due to danger of Union Army raids. He settles in Halifax Co., Va. Subjects include Confederate and Federal prisoners and casualties; Union Gen. John A. Dix; and social life and customs in Halifax Co. in 1863.

Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
